Intimate Partner Violence

A global issue affecting women around the world

Intimate partner violence (IPV) refers to violent behaviors by one's partner or ex-partner that can cause either psychological, sexual and/or physical harm. Types of behaviors include threats, intimidation, humiliation, and physical aggression such as hits to the head or strangulation. The World Health Organization estimates that one out of every three women in the world has experienced physical and or sexual violence from their partner or ex-partner.

Among women who attend the emergency room due to IPV-related injuries, 90% of those injuries are found on the head, neck and face. Of those who have experienced physical intimate partner violence, it is estimated that 74% have acquired at least one traumatic brain injury, and 50% multiple.

The urgent need for free and easy-to-access tools

Detecting possible brain injuries and cognitive sequelae

Despite the estimated high rates of acquired brain injury and related neuropsychological sequelae, very few women are being assessed for potential brain injury or cognitive impairment. This is in great part due to the lack of free and comprehensive neuropsychological tools, and the fact that very few women actually seek help (an estimated 21%)

The BELIEVE-FR Project

Development and validation of a free assessment tool

The main objective of the BELIEVE-FR project is to develop a free, cross-culturally sensitive, and computerized assessment tool to improve the detection of brain injury among women IPV survivors. This battery is currently being developed in French, English, Spanish and Portuguese. This project will also contribute population-based data on the prevalence of IPV-related brain injury in France, and findings on the potential causal mechanisms for neuropsychological alterations.
